24-year old Jewel Kilcher was born on May 23, 1974 in payson, Utah. Jewel grew up on an 800-acre homestead with her parents, Atz and Karol Kilcher, and her two bros. They had no television and their bathroom was an outhouse. Jewel spent most of her free time writing poems, writing in her journal and singing songs. When she turned 6 she was already singing with her parents in dinner show and local hotels. She was even yodleing at that time. She would often come home from school with a note from the teacher saying,"Please tell young Jewel to stop yodeling in class!!" But Jewel's parents and were not about to stop Jewel from doing what she loved to do. Even though other people said that it would ruin her voice to start yodeling at such a young age. (it obviously didn't)When Jewel was growing up she was tending to horses, as well as haying and working in their garden. When she was about 9 her parents got divorced and she was living with her dad in and out of bars and resturants. When she was with her mom, they were living in Jewel's van. Jewel finally got enough money to buy a new van and she gave her mother the old van that she had. After Jewel had finished school she moved to San Diego where her mother was last. She did not want to go to college so she took a few jobs. They were mostly run-of-the-mill jobs, which she disliked and she was also fired from a few of them. In a bold move she decided to quit her full-time job in favor of living in her van and writing songs. She spent most of her days writing poetry in coffeehouses, and in the night she was networking with local musicians. In 1994, this diamond in the rough was putting on 3-4 hour shows of original material in front of even larger crowds than she did before. That July she recorded 4 sets of live material at Interchange where some of the songs made it onto her album Pieces of You. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
